Description
Reefer (refrigerator container) — a container equipped with a refrigeration unit. Serves for transportation of goods that are sensitive to temperatures. Most often it has an aluminum body and polyurethane foam insulation. Since these containers have a built-in refrigeration and heating unit, they need to be connected to the power supply. In a warehouse or on a vessel, these will be fixed connection points, while in case of transportation on a trailer by road, mounted diesel generators connected to containers (“gen sets”) can be used. Some containers are equipped with a water cooling system that can be used for heat dissipation when the container is not adequately ventilated. Such systems are expensive and their use is declining. The value to such containers lies in the possibility of cheap transportation of fresh or frozen products from any part of the world. Refrigerator container bodies are usually built in China. The main and most common sizes of refrigerator containers (in length) are 20 feet (one TEU), 40 feet (two TEU) and 45 feet.
